Chapter Fourteen

Tuesday

A car rental company delivered Ava a car at lunch time. Her plan was to visit her dad after work as often as possible so she could have dinner with him some evenings, if she could get there early enough. They served dinner no later than 5:15 p.m.

Nina called me when she couldn’t reach Ava to tell us a friend at the college where she worked offered to let her stay with her until she can find another place to live.

“I can’t ask them to take Volker. He is so big and needs so much attention. Can you take him to a shelter for me?”

“My rescue will pay for his vetting and find him a home after the trial. Can he stay with the foster home longer?” I said.

“Oh, well then maybe I can post him on Craigslist to sell him if he has all that done for him,” she said.

“What?” I asked. “The vet bill is already over five hundred dollars, and I’m going to have to ask you to reimburse rescue if you want to sell him online. Really, Nina? This is the dog that saved your life,” I said not believing what she was saying.

“Well, I can’t worry about him right now anyway. I just miss Carlos so much,” she added crying.

“The detective who is working your case is fostering him. Ava and I are helping keep him on a schedule with walks,” I said. “He will keep him until we find the suspects, or it goes to trial. If you can’t take him back by then, I’ll find him a good home. Don’t worry about Volker. Take care of yourself.”

“I need to find another apartment. The Police have arranged for me to get out of the lease fearing gunmen may return since they know I’m not dead. My landlord agreed.”

“That is good news. I think it will be hard for you to go back and live in that house or in that neighborhood,” I said and added, “alone.”

“I’m not sure I can even take Volker back when I do find another place. Carlos said it was hard to find a place that would take large dogs. I’m not sure what I can afford without Carlos helping with the rent, and I’ve lost so much work. Do you know who I can contact to help me like you’re helping the dog?” she asked.

“Not really, but I’ll ask around. I’ve got to get back to work,” I said and hung up. I thought, this was a side of Nina I didn’t expect.

Jiff met me at home. I told him Ava left to visit her dad, so we decided to go to one of our favorite restaurants to sit outside. We tried to give as many restaurants as we could our business during this time of the pandemic. Restaurants, and those trying to make a living working at them, were all hurting.

Once we were seated at our table and could take off our masks, I mentioned what I had heard at the nursing home when we visited Ava’s dad regarding Q-Ball.
